Scurvy

Scurvy is possibly the oldest known deficiency disease. However, its specific connection to ascorbic acid was not known until the 20th century. 'The disease is widespread among children and is often incorrect for rheumatism, rickets, or paralysis. Scurvy was widely common in the 19th century among sailors on long voyages. The beginning of Scurvy is steady. The first symptoms of the disease are tiredness and general weakness. At the later stages, there is bleeding of the gums, because the lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) makes the capillaries fragile and their rupture is ordinary.

Indian gooseberry is beneficial in treating scurvy. The fruit of this plant should be eaten regularly. Have four fruits per day, at different periods.

  • Orange juice should be given to bottle-fed infants. The intake of breast-fed infants depends on the mother's diet. In the elderly, eating adequate fruit and vegetables is the best way to avoid scurvy.
  • Careful surveillance of the elderly, particularly those who live alone, is necessary. Ascorbic acid supplements should only be necessary occasionally.
  • The patient must also assume outdoor exercises like walking, swimming, and cycling. He must sleep in a well ventilated room, and spend as much time as possible in the fresh air

  • The juice of one lime or lemon needs to be added to glass of water with one table spoon full honey in it. This lemon and honey treated water needs to be consumed by slow sipping on daily basis.
  • Green mangoes are a good antidote for scurvy. The green mangoes are a good source for vitamin C and aamchur made for Indian cuisine can be preserved for a longer time also. It is to be consumed daily as a natural treatment process for the problem of scurvy. The citric element in aamchur proves beneficial for the treatment of scurvy.
  • Potato is a good natural agent to cure the problem of scurvy. One can use potato extract in curing scurvy; it is an efficient and effective natural remedy for scurvy.
  • Jaundice berry is a medicinal herb for the treatment of scurvy. Basically the leaves of this plant are considered active agents for the cure of scurvy. The juice of the berry can be taken at a time at the recommended dose of 2-5 ml.
